What is Pug Dog Encephalitis?
Source: Pug Dog Encephalitis Information
PDE (Pug Dog Encephalitis) is a fatal
disease that only affects Pugs. Pugs are generally between 9 and 19 months of
age when PDE symptoms occur, however older Pugs have shown symptoms. Symptoms
generally include seizure, staggering walk, apparent blindness, lethargy,
depression and neck pain. Dogs that are affected generally show signs that
indicate a brain or nervous system problem.
PDE is almost always impossible
for a Doctor to diagnose because an autopsy is the only way someone can tell for
certain if your Pug has PDE. If your veternarian has stated that s/he thinks
your Pug has PDE, try to make your Pug as comfortable as possible. Follow your
Vet's treatment plans, and love your little Pug every day that you have
together.
What to look for:
Seizures
Staggering Walks
Depression
Blindess
Pressing their heads against objects
Circling
Neck Pain
Prevention:
PDE is believed to be hereditary. Please do not breed your Pugs unless you are
an experienced caring breeder. PDE is not contaigious to humans, other Pugs, or
any other dog.
